- Mad Cow Eligibility: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its vCJD guidelines and it means most people who traveled, lived, or had a transfusion in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France from 1980 to present are now eligible to donate blood, as long as they meet all other donor eligibility requirements. Tips for a successful donation:
- Drink 16 oz before donating.
Eat a meal 2 hours before your donation. - Include red meat in your diet (2-3 meals two weeks prior)
- Enjoy your Green vegetables, such as broccoli, green beans, and cabbage, and leafy greens like spinach, kale, and cauliflower leaves, which are rich sources of iron.
- Be sure to drink water regularly.
- REMEMBER: After donation: no heavy lifting or vigorous exercise the rest of the day; grab a healthy snack and drink plenty of water.
