Right Whales Offshore Fernandina: A Historical Perspective

The Amelia Island Whale Ambassadors join the City of Fernandina Beach in celebrating its 200 year anniversary!

We are excited to invite you to a special presentation that delves into the fascinating history of the North Atlantic right whale in Fernandina Beach. Join us as we uncover the rich tapestry of events that have shaped the relationship between our community and these magnificent creatures over the years.

From the harrowing days of whaling in the 1800s, when right whales were ruthlessly hunted, to the profound impacts of local and regional events on whaling activities, our history is intertwined with theirs.   After the perilous decline of the right whale population due to extensive whaling that brought them to the brink of extinction, an increased awareness and hope began to emerge as researchers began to document the calving grounds off Fernandina.  

Barb Zoodsma, who retired from NOAA’s SE Right Whale Recovery, will touch on the challenges the North Atlantic right whale faces and the efforts launched from Fernandina Beach for their rescue and protection. These initiatives represent our community's enduring commitment to conservation and stewardship of our natural resources.
