Form Your Entity

Follow these steps to make sure you are navigating through all the required legal procedures.

       5.  Determine Local Business Licensing Requirements:

    • City of Fernandina Beach Business License
    • Any business physically located in the incorporated city limits must have a Local Business Tax Receipt (LBTR) issued by the City of Fernandina Beach: City of Fernandina Beach: Local Business Tax Receipt
    • The Local Business Tax (LBTR) Application has to be complete, or it cannot be accepted. Included in the LBTR application packet are:
      1) an Affidavit for Local Business Tax, which must be filled out, signed and witnessed; and
      2) an Affidavit for Home Local Business Tax, which must be read and signed if the business is going to be based on your home.
    • Businesses that are not home-based must be operated from a storefront or office. A Business Checklist for businesses that are not home-based is included in the LBTR application packet. A Local Business Tax inspection will be conducted by the Fire Marshal and an Inspector from the Building/Code Enforcement department.

    • For information on allowable signage in the City, please contact Planning Department staff, who can help you figure out what signage is permissible at your location. Planners are available at 904-310-3135. Sign permit applications can be found in the Document Center, under City Forms/Community Development/Business.

Securing the right permits and adhering to local and state code requirements are essential when launching a business. However, understanding and moving through the many stages of the permitting process can sometimes be daunting. To assist you, we've provided a step-by-step guide below, designed to simplify the procedure and minimize potential errors.

The City of Fernandina Beach requires that building permits be obtained prior to making any improvements, repairs or alterations to a property. Permit applications are accepted until 4:30 PM each day. Click here to view and access the city's new online permit application system.
